“Parents must be the primary decision-makers in their children’s education. The allegations that Burlington violated parents’ rights by administering a survey against parents’ wishes – and particularly one that is graphic, and downright inappropriate in nature – is unconscionable,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon.
Ottawa County parents – this information is very similar with our own county. Back in 2023, county commissioners vetted by Ottawa Impact, sounded the alarm on the YAS survey that many schools (both private and public) were choosing to participate in. Schools have options to opt out of the survey. Please take the time to find out if your school participates. If they do, I recommend reading the survey and deciding whether or not you want your child to participate.
Many youth that have taken a survey like this have shared then or much later in life that they wondered if something was wrong if them if they didn’t drink, smoke, have sex, etc. Adolescent is a stage that most adults are thankful only happens once and realize that their teenage thoughts and perceptions often were influenced by the peers around them. When surveys such as this are given to teens, many of them will not answer truthfully and/or will begin questioning their own choices to not participate in some of the behavior mentioned in the survey.
Parents – you have options.
